About Surgical Oncology of Northeast Georgia

Practice Areas

My practice specialty is Oncologic Surgery. My focus is on patients with liver cancer. I also care for patients with cancers of the head and neck, breast, and abdomen.

Surgical Practice
My practice name is Surgical Oncology of Northeast Georgia. SONG. I am in a solo office based practice. This allows me to devote my time, energies, and experience to the care of the cancer patient. I consult, when needed, with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists here locally and also with interventional radiologists and surgical oncologists across the nation. I then combine my personal experience and knowledge with consultative advice from other physicians to devise a treatment plan for each patient. I operate and care for my hospitalized patients on the Lanier Park Campus of Northeast Georgia Medical Systems.

Professional History
I was born in 1949 and have spent most of my life in Georgia. After attending Emory Medical School, I remained at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals where I completed my internship and residency in General Surgery. I then completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Since the early 1980’s I have been certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I had the great benefit of having my father as a senior surgeon, partner, and tutor during my formative years in practice as a younger surgeon. I have learned much also from other physicians and from my patients. I put these years of experience now toward the care of the surgical cancer patient.

A great focus of my present efforts, dating back several years now, has been devoted to the care of the patient with cancer of the liver. I also do a significant amount of surgery for cancers of the breast, abdomen, and head and neck. This diverse experience provides me with a strong background in the general field of surgical oncology and helps me with overall perspective as I care for patients with liver cancer.

Personal History
I have few outside interests other than my medical practice, my family, and watching my childrens’ sports activities. (Fortunately, we still have one child active in sports.) I have developed an interest in the remarkable recent history of genetics and cancer development. The other area of human endeavor that intrigues me is decision making in human affairs and I am a great admirer of the deceased economist/organizational behaviorist/decision analyst Herbert Alexander Simon.

I am married with three children and two grandchildren. My wife and I are still raising a teenage girl at home, have a young woman at college (Auburn…..War Eagle), and we have a son who works for GM making vans in Doraville. While each child has presented his or her challenges, it has made for a full life, and we are blessed to have three children whom I love and am very proud.

My practice is devoted to the care of the cancer patient. Several key people support me in my office based practice. My practice manager and nurse Linda Coghlan does a great job for my patients as do Geneva, Betty, and Shirley, all of whom have been with me for years now. Our strengths are of sophisticated medical expertise in the context of a small patient oriented organization with a dedication to the management of the cancer patient. My surgical practice is on the Lanier Park Campus of Northeast Georgia Health Systems, just a tenth of a mile away.

Please contact my office to learn more about my practice and methods of liver cancer treatment.
